Divergent is the new Hunger Games

The resemblance between the two movies is clear to anyone looking.

divergent

Based on the 2011 best seller of the same name, Divergent the movie officially hit theaters worldwide on March 21st. American author Veronica Roth finished publishing the trilogy in 2012, and in 2013 the rights for the movie were purchased by Summit Entertainment. Even from the book stage, the story has been compared to The Hunger Games, because of the similar theme and target audience. But now that movie is out, the similarities keep growing. Actress Shailene Woodley could easily play Jennifer Lawrence‘s sister, and she’s even cut her hair short since the filming! “I love being thought of as a symbol of female empowerment at the age of 22 — that young girls are going to see me as that,” the actress revealed after a screening.

While Shailene Woodley and Theo James said they were amazed by how well the movie was received in Atlanta, and how many frenzied fans were already there, the big surprise came at the LA premiere. Nikita Actress Maggie Q stole the show in a fitted bodycon dress with lateral cutouts, which showed she wasn’t wearing any underwear. Meanwhile, Shailene’s gold thigh slit, one shouldered Elie Saab dress went almost unnoticed. Not the same can be said about co-star Kate Winslet, who stunned in a beautiful red gown. See more pictures from the LA premiere here and check out Shailene Woodley on the latest cover of Marie Claire magazine.

Angelina Jolie stuns in Maleficent poster

One of the movie posters is out and we love it, but we’re also terrified.

Maleficent

Maleficent is based on the 1959 Disney classic cartoon, Sleeping Beauty, but it focuses on Maleficent’s story that leads her to cursing Aurora (to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” on her sixteenth birthday). In 2014, Maleficent is none other than Angelina Jolie, while innocent Aurora is Elle Fanning. The newly released movie posted features Angelina in green contacts, almost black and white skin, devilish leather horns, a high collar and red lip, just like the original villain had.

But Maleficent hasn’t always been like this, not in this fairytale spinoff. She grew up pure, but betrayal turns her heart to stone. “Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite”, Angelina says. “I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her, and I wanted to know more about her, I wanted to know what she was like, and who she was. She had this elegance and this grace and yet she was so cruel and she was just wonderful, deliciously cruel.” However, not everyone felt the same: little kids who came to visit on set were frightened by the witch.

Angelina Jolie hasn’t acted since 2011, when she voiced Tigress in Kung Fu Panda 2. We suspect that her having kids makes her take on child-friendly roles, rather than the controversial ones that made her famous. She is currently filming Kung Fu Panda 3. Maleficent will be out on May 30, 2014.

10 movies to watch this Halloween

Ready for a marathon of horror?

1. Halloween (1978)

Begin with this 1978 classic, about a murderer who stalks a teenage girl and her friends. Featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and not for the faint at heart.

2. Phycho (1960)

The same psychotic mood in a Hitchcock classic. The special effects of the 60s may look funny now, but the feeling is still a little creepy. You know that famous shower scene?

3. The Addams Family (1991)

A light comedy that's just right for Halloween. It's worth seeing Angelica Houston as the creepy mom and Christina Ricci as a young girl.

4. Dracula (1992)

Before vampires were as cool as they are now, there was Count Dracula, in Francis Ford Coppola's view. Starring Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins.

5. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Documentaries have never before been so scary. The realism of the movie is what makes it a Halloween classic.

6. The Exorcist (1973)

One of the oldest scary movies tells the story of a possessed teenage girls, and her mother's struggle to save her.

7. Let the Right One In (2008)

A Swedish movie about a boy and a girl who both have their quirks. Turns out, she's really an old vampire.

8. Carrie (2013)

How about seeing the 1976 version and the 2013 version in one night? That is, if you can handle it… The horror flick comes out on October 18 and it stars Chloe Meretz.

9. The Conjuring (2013)

A haunted house is a good idea – at least for Halloween! A couple of paranormal investigators are faced with a challenge in this one.

10. American Horror Story (2011)

Yes, we realize this is a show and not a movie, but it's absolutely perfect for Halloween! The new season, Coven, features Evan Peters, Jessica Lange and Emma Roberts! And you don't have to watch the first seasons to get into the third one.

A Harry Potter spinoff is on the way. What are the original actors doing now?

J.K. Rowling will be penning a new movie for Warner Bros.

July 2011 marked a sad time for all Harry Potter fans, who thought they were watching the last of their favorite series. Fortunately – or unfortunately – the bestselling author, J.K. Rowling decided to take the wheel of the fictional world once again. Warner Bros just announced that they’re working with the author on another few movies based on the “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them”, a book within the book. Kind of like The Hobbit did with Lord of the Rings. Rowling will write the scripts herself, following the adventures of Newt Scamander, the author of the above named book. “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling says. The story will be set 70 years before Harry’s time in Hogwarts, and will subsequently include none of our favorite main characters. In case you miss them, here’s what they’re up to now:

Harry Potter

Daniel Radcliffe aka Harry Potter: The actor has been trying hard to put his Harry Potter days behind him and make a name for himself. He took off his round wizard glasses and put on many Hollywood and theater roles. Since 2011, he could be seen in The Woman in Black, Robot Chicken, A Young Doctor’s Notebook, Kill Your Darlings, Horns and The F Word. “I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you it wasn’t for Harry Potter. I’m under no illusions,” he recently said at the Toronto Film Festival. And according to Perez Hilton, Radcliffe has the hots for Katy Perry!

Emma Watson aka Hermione Granger: The actress is probably the most prominent face of the whole cast. We’ve seen her in My Week with Marilyn, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, and This is the End since the end of the HP series, and she’s done a great job in all of them. In 2013, Emma is GQ’s Woman of the Year, and she’s preparing to take on a new role, that of a suicidal author in Your Voice in My Head. While trying to leave her Hermione reputation behind, Emma says: “I’m prepared to wait it out. If it takes five years, it takes five years. If it takes more time . . . I’m here for the long haul.”

Rupert Grint aka Ron Weasly: Rupert has been taking on roles in Into the White, Super Clyde, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman and CBGB. Apparently, he’s also lined up for a new screen adaptation of Macbeth. Rupert is named “ginger hero” by FHM Magazine, who put him on the cover of their Collections A/W 2013 Style Manual, and interview him about going “back to normal when all you’ve ever known is Harry Potter”.
